There is no way to get around it, patents are complicated! That doesn’t mean that there aren’t plenty of people out there who want to sell easy solutions for your patent problems. There are lots of books and services for the DIY inventor who wants to submit an application. The problem is that there is more to getting a patent and just submitting a patent application.
In my own experience, I have talked a lot with inventors who have submitted weak patent applications that are in rejection. They don’t know what to do because they’re stuck with a poorly written application that they may not be able to resurrect. Even starting over can be too difficult because although the submitted application is poor it can still serve as prior art against a new, better application.
It’s always better to work with someone who knows the ropes of patent law, either a patent agent or patent attorney. The extra cost is money well spent. For more information about finding a registered practitioner check out my previous post and video here.
